Beyond the ball drop: Unusual New Year’s Eve traditions in North Carolina

We’ve all seen the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, but North Carolina may arguably have more interesting traditions.

Here are some of the ways WTVD reports North Carolina cities and towns bring in the new year.

Mount Olive is known for its pickles, so the town drops a giant pickle into a pickle jar. They’ve been doing it for 22 years. It should be noted that this year’s pickle drop is unfortunately canceled due to weather.

Raleigh, nicknamed the “City of Oaks,” drops a giant acorn in a tradition that’s been carried out for 30 years.

Mount Airy is also known as the fictitious town of Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. Each year, the city has a countdown and raises a giant sheriff’s badge.

Here in Charlotte, we drop a crown in honor of the Queen City.
