Bicycles, schools and jails on THE AGENDA

The gears are turning as citizens try to find the best solutions for pedestrians and bicyclists when it comes to sharing the road in Staunton.
The gears are turning as citizens try to find the best solutions for pedestrians and bicyclists when it comes to sharing the road in Staunton.

The Staunton Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee will review the Staunton Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan during their Tuesday, Dec. 5, meeting. The plan was initially passed in 2018 and the first project, changes to Churchville Avenue, was presented in 20222.  A public forum on Sept. 25 sought input on adding bicycle infrastructure to W. Beverley Street — a repaving will repurpose driving and turning lanes into bike lanes, where possible.

The plan notes that while northern and southern Staunton both have intersections catering to pedestrian traffic, it goes on to say southern Staunton “is also home to large retail centers and large vehicular roadways. Enhancing pedestrian infrastructure here is key to providing safer routes for existing and new walkers.”

Key routes in northern Staunton include:

•  Churchville Avenue (near Gypsy Hill Park)

• Coalter Street (near the high school)

•  Edgewood Road (at Coalter and Augusta streets)

•  Englewood Drive, Beverley Street (west of Hays Avenue).

Key routes in southern Staunton include:

• Richmond Avenue (from  Greenville Avenue to  Frontier Drive)

• Greenville Avenue (from  Richmond Avenue to  Sterling Street)

• Middlebrook Avenue (from  Hampton Street to Lacy B  King Way)

• Montgomery Avenue  (from Beverley Street to  Montgomery Hall Park)

The Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals will host public hearings on three properties; a 3-megawatt solar facility at 147 Wayne Avenue in South River District, a request from a Verizon Wireless representative to construct a wireless telecommunications tower at 85 Shenandoah Mountain Drive in west Augusta, and an office for audio/visual production at 53 Deerwood Lane, Lyndhurst.

The Staunton City School Board will celebrate the Teachers of the Year and Support Staff of the Year during its Dec. 11 meeting. The teachers and staff are selected first by a peer vote in each school, then are entered into a division-wide selection process for teacher of the year, according to Staunton City Schools' Facebook page. The Augusta County School Board will also celebrate the Council for Exceptional Children’s Administrator of the Year, Shannon Brake, principal of Cassell Elementary school.

The Middle River Regional Jail Authority Board will present reports on the people held in the facility, including information about available programs and mental health. The board's 2023 audit and 2024 finance report will be reviewed and voted on, according to the agenda.
