Bicyclist dies after being struck by SUV in Warrick County

EVANSVILLE — A 73-year-old bicyclist who was severely injured in Warrick County on Friday after he was struck by a Ford SUV has died, according to Sheriff Mike Wilder.

Wilder previously identified the bicyclist as Clifford Dennis Engelhardt, of Elberfeld, Indiana. Engelhardt died at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville.

The fatal incident occurred near the intersection of Stevenson Station Road and Titzer Road and was reported to Warrick County 911 dispatchers at 7:44 a.m. Friday

In a statement, Wilder said Englehardt "turned into the path of the Ford Escape," a claim Wilder attributed to eyewitness accounts. Englehardt had his helmet on, and flashing lights were present on his bicycle.

Engelhardt was reportedly traveling north on Stevenson Station Road when he attempted to turn left onto Titzer Road and was struck by the Ford SUV, which was traveling south.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have contributed to the collision, according to Wilder.
