Bicyclist killed early Friday in hit-and-run crash on U.S. 441 South in Summerfield

SUMMERFIELD — A bicyclist was killed in the pre-dawn hours Friday in the 14000 block of U.S. 441 South, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Here is what we know:

When did this happen?

FHP was notified at 4:59 a.m. Friday.

How did the crash happen?

FHP said the bicyclist was southbound in southbound lane of U.S. 441 when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that also was southbound. The vehicle did not stop at the scene.

The bicyclist, who's from Umatilla and was 44 years old, landed in the outside lane and was struck multiple times by other vehicles.

Two vehicles stopped in the outside southbound lane: a semitractor-trailer and a pickup truck. The right front tire of the latter vehicle was punctured due to all the debris in the road.

The crash scene

Debris was scattered about a half mile. Southbound traffic was blocked from Southeast 136th Street Road to the crash site. Northbound lanes were not affected.

Troopers said they're looking for a 1994 to 1998 silver or gray Chevy Silverado, Tahoe or Suburban vehicle that may be connected to the crash. Troopers said it's unknown where the bicyclist was traveling.
