Bicyclist killed while riding on shoulder, driver arrested for vehicular homicide

A bicyclist was struck and killed Friday afternoon while riding on Central Valley Road by a driver who crossed onto the shoulder and then fled, according to a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The alleged driver, a 28-year-old man, was found within an hour. He was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide and felony hit and run, said Lt. Ken Dickinson.

The identity of the cyclist, a 62-year-old Poulsbo man, has not been released. Authorities are working to contact his next of kin, Dickinson said.

The crash was reported at 12:48 p.m. on the 8000 block of Central Valley Road, north of Foster Road and near Fairview Middle School. Both the cyclist and the driver were traveling south on the road when the cyclist was struck.

“It went onto the shoulder and struck the bicyclist and then fled the scene,” Dickinson said.

Deputies began searching for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and located the suspect vehicle at an apartment complex on Fairgrounds Road at 1:39 p.m., where the driver was arrested, Dickinson said.
