Bicyclists come together to raise money during first-ever ‘Rush to Crush Cancer’

Hundreds of bicyclists hit the road from the North Shore Saturday morning for the first-ever “Rush to Crush Cancer.”

For many people, the ride is personal.

“My father was treated at Hillman Center. Unfortunately, he’s not here anymore so I’m doing the ride for him,” said Michael Stark from Glenshaw.

Nearly 800 riders took part in the inaugural event, including NBA basketball player Cam Johnson from Moon Township.

“My Uncle Tony, he’s fighting pancreatic cancer right now,” said Johnson.

His family joined him for the ride, including his cousin, his son, other relatives and friends.

“They put together this team and got me in on it and I’ve been excited about it. Something that has brought him joy over the process and we’re doing something for a good cause.”

The ride is not a race. It includes three distances, 60 miles, 40 miles and 15 miles.

All the money raised during the event will be put towards cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

“The research mission support work in our labs, clinical research trials, outreach and education, so really it’s a benefit to our patients into the future generations impacted by cancer,” said Beth Wild, president of the Hillman Cancer Center.

Organizers expected to raise $3 million.
