Biden asks Congress to allocate $37 billion to Ukraine

The request includes $21.7 billion for military, intelligence and other defense support, $14.5 billion for humanitarian assistance and support for the work of the Ukrainian government, $900 million for health care and support for Ukrainians living in the United States, and $626 million for nuclear security support to Ukraine.

The Biden administration's request also includes $9.25 billion to prepare for a possible winter COVID-19 surge. Assistance to Ukraine and preparation for the coronavirus will be part of the government's funding package through the end of September 2023.

The AP notes that the request for a significant amount of funds for Ukraine came at a time when the Republican Party is poised to take control of the House of Representatives after the midterm elections for both houses of the U.S. legislature. House Minority Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is set to become speaker, has warned that Republicans will not support a "blank check" for Ukraine if they get the majority.

On Nov. 14, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov stated that Western countries will face serious consequences if they stop supplying weapons in response to Ukraine's refusal to negotiate with Russia.

On Nov. 15, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that Ukraine needs to strengthen air and missile defense, as well as increase the quantity of artillery available.
