President Biden and King Abdullah II of Jordan will make a public appearance together during a White House visit Monday. Jordan is a U.S. ally that has long been a crucial mediator in Middle East peace negotiations.

Jordan is likely to be highly involved in attempts to solidify any new agreements reached between Israel and Palestinian leadership. But as AP reports, Jordan and other Arab countries are calling for a cease-fire as a precondition to such discussions.

Jordan’s indirect involvement in the Israel-Hamas war escalated in January when three American service members stationed in Jordan were killed in a drone strike on a U.S. base. Biden has identified a militia supported by Iran as responsible for the attack, which also injured more than 40 others.

The leaders are scheduled to speak beginning at 4 p.m. EST.
