Biden leads Trump, 49%-44%, among likely Wisconsin voters in latest Marquette Poll

MILWAUKEE – Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump in Wisconsin, according to Tuesday's Marquette University Law School Poll.

Among likely voters, those who say they're absolutely certain they'll cast ballots in the fall, Biden holds a 49% to 44% advantage over Trump.

Among registered voters, Biden had a 6-point lead, poll director Charles Franklin said.

In last month's survey, Biden led Trump by 49% to 41% among registered voters.

At this same point in the 2016 race in Wisconsin, the Marquette Poll showed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton leading Trump by 10 percentage points among registered voters and 15 points among likely voters. Trump narrowly won the state in the general election and claimed the White House.

Trump was viewed favorably by 42% and unfavorably by 55%, while Biden was viewed favorably by 43% and unfavorably by 48%.

"Until 2016, we had not seen presidential candidates who were both seen as more unfavorable than favorable," Franklin said.

The poll found high levels of engagement among Democrats and Republicans but a lower level of engagement among independents.

Around 87% of Democrats and Republicans say they are certain to vote, compared to just 60% of independents.

Democrats and Republicans are almost equally likely to say they are certain to vote in November, with independents somewhat less so. About 87 percent of both Democrats and Republicans say they are certain to vote, while independents are 60 percent are certain to vote.

Respondents were also asked how enthusiastic they are about voting in November’s election. Among Democrats, 65 percent are very enthusiastic and 64 percent of Republicans are equally enthusiastic. Thirty-seven percent of independents say they are very enthusiastic about voting this fall.

As for attention to politics and public affairs, 72 percent of Democrats say they follow what’s going on in politics most of the time, as do 71 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of independents.

Thirty-five percent said they intend to vote by mail in the fall, compared to 46% who said they'll vote in person on election day.

The survey of 801 registered voters was in the field last week.
