Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said “apartheid states aren’t democracies” in what appears to be a thinly veiled criticism of Israel.

The New York lawmaker’s comments came in a tweet over the weekend amid continuing violence in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Ms Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers on the left of the party are calling on Joe Biden to take a tougher line on the violence.

But the president has so far given no signs of stepping up public pressure on Israel to agree to an immediate cease-fire despite calls from some Democrats to do so.

Elsewhere, former president, Donald Trump, sent a secret memo to Pentagon chiefs urging them to remove troops from the Middle East, Europe and Africa shortly after his election defeat, it has emerged.

According to Axios, Mr Trump sent a handwritten note asking generals to withdraw soldiers from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, as well as Germany and Africa.
