Biden on a potential Trump-DeSantis 2024 showdown: 'It'll be fun'

President Joe Biden responded quickly, and playfully, on Wednesday when asked about a potential 2024 Republican primary between former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“It’ll be fun watching them take on each other,” Biden said at anews conference in which he reviewed Tuesday’s midterm elections. He didn’t answer the specific question asked by NBC reporter Kristen Welker, which was whether DeSantis or Trump would make a more formidable opponent.

Neither Republican has officially announced a 2024 campaign for the Oval Office, though both arewidely expected to run. Trump has said a“very big announcement” is coming within the next week.

DeSantis was an ardent supporter of the former president during his administration, but the two Republicans could be pitted against each other in the near future.

Trump, for his part, has run hot and cold on DeSantis in recent weeks: The former president and Florida residentnicknamed DeSantis “Ron DeSanctimonious” in a rally last week butvoted for him on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, after DeSantis won reelection, Trump posted a rhetorical question on social media seemingly targeting the governor.

“[S]houldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year ... Just asking?” Trump wrote on his own social media platform, Truth Social.

At his news conference on Wednesday, Biden was also asked about his plans to run for reelection in 2024. As he has said before, the president said he intends to run.
