Biden refuses to answer press questions during meeting with UK prime minister

White House staff herded reporters out of the Oval Office, interrupting U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was answering questions from the British press during a joint meeting with President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

Biden refused to take any questions from the U.S. press corps and told Johnson “good luck” when he asked whether he could end the meeting by answering questions from journalists. After only two questions from British journalists, staff interrupted the prime minister by suddenly demanding that the press leave the room.

As reporters shouted questions to Biden on their way out, he responded that “the violence is unacceptable” to a question from Ed O’Keefe of CBS about the immigration crisis at the southern border.

“That’s absurd,” said one of the reporters as they exited the White House. “Two British reporters get questions and we don’t get anything.”

The journalists immediately lodged a complaint with White House press secretary Jen Psaki “that no American reporters were recognized for questions in the president’s Oval Office” and that no one could hear the answer to O’Keefe’s question due to the staffers shouting at them to leave.

Biden, 78, often declines to interact with the press and has suggested that he is not in control of when and from whom he can take questions. There have been several instances of him rambling off-script and apparently forgetting important information.
