Joe Biden is delivering his first major speech to Congress, focusing on American families, a tax rise for the rich and the coronavirus rescue plan.

The prime-time address marks Mr Biden’s first 100 days in office with an outline of a domestic policy agenda the president hopes will prove "democracy still works".

Eyes are on the GOP response as Biden calls the assault on the US Capitol by supporters of former president Donald Trump the "Worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War".

Coupled with the coronavirus pandemic and crippled economy, Biden says he inherited a "nation in crisis" that his administration will recover through its "American Families Plan"

The president outlines how the initiative create jobs that can’t be outsourced, while raising capital gains tax to fund childcare costs and free pre-school for all Americans.

As Biden addresses the pandemic, police reform, immigration and gun safety, his predecessor is preparing to respond. Trump is appearing on Fox News to speak with Maria Bartiromo early Thursday morning when he is expected to discuss Biden’s speech, as wells as taxes and the US-Mexico border.
