That has less to do with what Biden has done than with what he has managed to avoid, namely terrifying an already-addled nation with the sense of a West Wing in utter disarray, unwilling to answer simple questions about when the president first learned that he was sick or what the White House Medical Unit is doing to keep others in the building safe. At the moment, Biden is teaching a master class on letting your opponent's candidacy self-destruct,” tweeted David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report, which analyzes congressional races.
Nine prisoners were killed when rival gangs clashed with knives Friday in one of the Philippines' most overcrowded prisons, officials said. It was not immediately clear what set off the violence between the Sputnik and Commando gangs before dawn at New Bilibid Prison in metropolitan Manila. Seven other inmates were wounded in the clash, Bureau of Corrections spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said.
Photos show a path of destruction in hurricane-weary Louisiana after Delta made landfall as a Category 2 storm Friday night. Hundreds of thousands remain without power in a state already reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Laura in August, which killed at least 26 people. While it rapidly weakened upon landfall, Delta further damaged an already hard-hit area — particularly in towns like Lake Charles, Louisiana, where repairs from Laura were still incomplete.
The UK, France, and Germany this week pledged to sanction Russia over the August 20 poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin. The sanctions will target "individuals deemed responsible" and "an entity involved in the Novichok program," France and Germany said. It will likely have no effect in Moscow.
President Trump continued to hail an experimental monoclonal antibody treatment as a “cure” for COVID-19, telling conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh in a Friday interview that it sped his recovery from the disease and was “better than a vaccine.” “I was not in great shape, but we have a medicine that healed me, that fixed me,” Trump said of the antibody “cocktail” manufactured by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Since being released on Monday from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he was treated for three days after being admitted with a high fever, chills and breathing problems, Trump has often pointed to the antibody therapy he undertook at the hospital as a “cure” for COVID-19.
Police in Hong Kong said Saturday they have arrested nine people on suspicion of providing funds and other assistance to a group of 12 who sought to flee the territory by boat in August but were intercepted by Chinese authorities. A police official said the nine, including four men and five women, were believed to be friends of those in the earlier group. They were arrested on the charge of assisting offenders and believed to have also arranged for the boat and furnished transport and accommodation, Ho Chun-tung of the Organized Crime Division told reporters.
Belarus' authoritarian president on Saturday visited a prison to talk to opposition activists, who have been jailed for challenging his re-election that was widely seen as manipulated and triggered two months of protests. President Alexander Lukashenko spent more than four hours talking to his jailed political foes at the Minsk prison that belongs to Belarus' State Security Committee, which still goes under its Soviet-era name, KGB. Lukashenko's office said that “the goal of the president was to hear everyone's opinion."
Malaysia's maritime authorities said on Saturday they had detained 60 Chinese nationals and six Chinese-registered fishing vessels they said were trespassing into the Southeast Asian country's waters. Malaysia reported 89 intrusions by Chinese coastguard and navy ships between 2016 and 2019, amid escalating tensions between the United States and China over Beijing's claims to most of the resource-rich South China Sea, which is also a major trade route. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the fishing vessels and crew were detained in an operation off the coast of the southern state of Johor on Friday.
Donald Trump hosted hundreds of people outside the White House on Saturday for his first in-person event since contracting COVID-19—but his administration wouldn't say whether he's still infected with the virus. “We gotta vote these people into oblivion,” Trump told the crowd of supporters in a brief 18-minute speech from a White House balcony, far shorter than his typical rally addresses. The in-person event marked Trump's return to the campaign spotlight after announcing his COVID-19 diagnosis on Oct. 2 and being hospitalized at Maryland's Walter Reed hospital.

China said it dispatched ships and planes to track the U.S. guided-missile destroyer John S. McCain as it passed near Chinese-held islands in the South China Sea. The People's Liberation Army accused the U.S. warship of trespassing into Chinese territorial waters on Friday near the Paracel Islands — called Xisha by China — during the latest freedom of navigation missions by the U.S. Navy aimed at defying China's vast claims in the strategic waterway. Spokesperson for the PLA's Southern Theater Command Col. Zhang Nandong said Beijing demanded the U.S. end such actions, calling them “blatant navigation hegemony and military provocation” that “seriously violated China's sovereignty and security interests, and gravely jeopardized peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
A new $1.8 trillion economic stimulus proposal from the Trump administration drew criticism from congressional Democrats and Republicans on Saturday, diminishing hopes for a coronavirus relief deal before the Nov. 3 election. In a weekly letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the Trump administration's proposal lacked a "strategic plan to crush the virus" and gave President Donald Trump too much discretion to decide how funds were allocated. "At this point, we still have disagreement on many priorities, and Democrats are awaiting language from the Administration on several provisions as the negotiations on the overall funding amount continue," Pelosi's letter said.

The pontiff, known for his affinity for social media and technology, said in a videotaped message to a TED conference on climate change that the coronavirus pandemic had put a focus on the social-environmental challenge facing the globe. “Science tells us, every day with more precision, that it is necessary to act with urgency — I am not exaggerating, science tell us this — if we want to have the hope of avoiding radical changes in the climate and catastrophes,” Francis said, looking directly in the camera as he looked up from his prepared remarks.
Eric Trump really spun himself into a confusing web with this one. The first son and campaign surrogate to his father, President Donald Trump, attacked former Vice President Joe Biden in a tweet on Thursday that appeared to refute reality — and which quickly sparked bewilderment online. He spoke after the president said he would no longer participate in a debate against Mr Biden next week, citing the debate commission's announcement that it would change the event to be virtual instead of in-person following his Covid-19 diagnosis.
As tumultuous as the three months since the reopening have been, however, public health officials and Disney World's unions say there have been no coronavirus outbreaks among workers or guests. So far, Disney's wide-ranging safety measures appear to be working. We have no issues or concerns with the major theme parks at this point,” said Dr. Raul Pino, director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, which includes Disney World.
North Korea unveiled what appears to be a massive new intercontinental ballistic missile at a big military parade Saturday. Expert North Korea watchers said in early analysis the road-mobile, liquid-fueled missile was massive, with one suspecting that it might be capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads. "We will continue to strengthen war deterrence for self-defense to deter, control and manage all dangerous attempts and threatening acts, including ever-growing nuclear threats, from hostile forces," North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Saturday.

The Office of the Attorney General of Virginia announced on Friday the findings of a months-long investigation, which found that Antle and the owner of another wildlife park in Virginia had trafficked lion cubs between Virginia and South Carolina.
