President Joe Biden announced Thursday the United States's plan to purchase and distribute 500 million doses of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine to needy countries around the globe.

Biden's comments framed America as an "arsenal of vaccines" in the global fight against COVID-19 and made good on senior White House officials' stated goal for the presence at the 2021 G-7 summit, as one put it: "Show the rest of the world that the United States has the power and purpose to be able to deliver as the world's leading democracy."

THE WHITE HOUSE HAD A DISASTROUS START TO THE WEEK. CAN BIDEN RIGHT THE SHIP IN EUROPE?

"America knows firsthand the tragedies of this pandemic. We've had more people die in the United States than anywhere in the world," Biden, flanked by Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, stated. "We know the tragedy. We also know the path to recovery."

"From the beginning of my presidency, we've been clear-eyed," he continued, "to offer a helping hand as best we can."

The president added that vaccinating the world "is also in America's interests."

"We know that COVID-19 raging in other countries pulls back global growth, raises instability, and weakens governments," he continued. "It is in all of our interests to have the global economy recover as well. That won't happen unless we can get the pandemic under control worldwide."

"This is a monumental commitment by the American people," the president said in closing. "We're going to help lead the world out of this pandemic."

It's worth noting that following his remarks, the president chuckled at but did not answer a question from the press pool about whether or not he thinks his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin will deter Russian actors from carrying out future malign activity.

A senior White House official told the Washington Examiner Thursday that Biden's announcement fulfills the administration's second COVAX pledge, following on the heels of a $2 billion investment in the global vaccine initiative in February.

The official added that the U.S. will determine which countries receive doses in conjuction with COVAX's list of the 92 countries in most need of coronavirus support. The U.S. will ship a number of the Pfizer doses directly to some countries while using COVAX's distribution network, which helps supply countries around the world with a number of vaccines every year, to distribute the remainder.
