Bidens mark Cinco de Mayo, welcome Mexico's first lady
STORY: Beatriz Gutierrez Müller, wife of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was invited by U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, was greeted by the Bidens at the Rose Garden reception.
In his speech, Biden remarked on the impact of Mexican-American culture in the United States and urged Congress to pass an immigration bill he proposed in his first week in office but remains stalled.
''We are an immigrant nation. We say that, but people act like they don't believe it. We are an immigrant nation and that is our strength. That is our strength.” Biden said in his speech.
Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla that took place on May 5, 1862 when Mexican forces overcame Napoleon Bonaparte's encroaching French army. It has evolved over the decades and today stands as a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.
Mexico's actual Independence Day is celebrated on September 16, marking the beginning of Mexico's 1810-1821 war of independence from Spain.
