On Tuesday night, President Joe Biden gave his second State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. The economy was in sharp focus during the speech, and the president clashed with Republican hecklers.
Here's a look at how last night's topics played out on social media.
Takeaways from Joe Biden's State of the Union address
USA TODAY outlined five takeaways from Tuesday night's speech:
Biden set the stage for a likely reelection campaign in 2024.
Biden accused "some Republicans" of wanting to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Blue collar workers were in the spotlight.
U.S.-China relations were mentioned, but not the balloon.
Biden recognized the parents of Tyre Nichols and renewed his push for police reform laws.

Why did Republicans boo during Joe Biden's State of the Union?
Biden's accusation about Medicare and Social Security brought boos from Republicans, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., retorted by calling him a liar.
"Anybody who doubts it, contact my office. I'll give you a copy of the proposal," Biden said in response to Greene.

Hoosier representation is strong at the #SOTU tonight.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican. We can all work together to get the job done. pic.twitter.com/OIKhGP8QWJ— André Carson (@RepAndreCarson) February 8, 2023
On Twitter, officials in Washington D.C. elected by Indiana voters sounded off on key issues mentioned — and left out of — Biden's speech. Here's what Hoosiers in Congress had to say before, during and after the address:
Purdue president attends with Sen. Todd Young
I’m excited to have @PurduePresident join me for tonight’s State of the Union address.
Dr. Chiang was an early supporter of the legislation that became the CHIPS and Science Act, and Purdue will be an instrumental partner in the implementation of the new law. pic.twitter.com/CT0NW7efhq— Senator Todd Young (@SenToddYoung) February 8, 2023
On the budget and inflation
We’ve made historic progress the last two years, but we have more work to do. I’ll continue working across the aisle strengthen the middle class and rebuild our economy. https://t.co/3QaKrn7uw3

Pres. Biden was supposed to deliver his FY24 budget to Congress yesterday, yet he missed the deadline & reportedly won't provide it until March.
I think the American ppl have a right to know Pres. Biden's plan to get our fiscal house in order b4 tonight's address, don't you?— Congressman Jim Baird (@RepJimBaird) February 7, 2023
Friendly reminder: disposable income actually FELL by $1 TRILLION in 2022– that’s one of the largest drops in real disposable income ever, second only to the Great Depression.

The economy is suffering and the cost of living has reached historic highs under President Biden’s leadership. His claim that he is building the economy from the bottom up and the middle out is clearly not working for Hoosier families, farmers, and businesses on Main Street.

Joe Biden has been in office for 24 months.
December was the 21st straight month that real wages have been negative.

January 2021 inflation rate: 1.4%
February 2023 inflation rate: 6.5%
Let’s be clear: inflation hasn’t come down under President Biden, and this inflation is a tax on every single American.— Congressman Jim Baird (@RepJimBaird) February 8, 2023
Our national debt exceeded $31 trillion for the first time in the last year, and more Americans are living paycheck to paycheck than ever. Hoosiers want real solutions.
— Senator Mike Braun (@SenatorBraun) February 8, 2023
President Biden’s claim that the Inflation Reduction Act will lower prescription drug prices is simply not true. Experts have repeatedly told Congress that prescription drug price control schemes inside this partisan bill will lead to higher prices and fewer cures for Hoosiers.

President Trump capped insulin at $35. Joe Biden repealed this order just so he could take credit. Shameful!
— Jim Banks (@RepJimBanks) February 8, 2023
Democrats’ reckless spending led to historic inflation, but Biden insists everything’s going according to plan.
His speech is deeply disconnected from the reality Hoosiers are facing everyday. #SOTU— Congressman Rudy Yakym (@RepRudyYakym) February 8, 2023
On energy production
Under President Biden’s leadership we have seen firsthand how his rush to green agenda has driven up our energy costs. With House Republicans in the majority, we have passed critical bills like H.R. 21 and H.R. 22 to combat his energy agenda and keep our #CommitmentToAmerica.
— Larry Bucshon, MD (@RepLarryBucshon) February 8, 2023
Joe Biden just said American energy producers are worried he’s trying to put them out of business.
That’s because he is! #SOTU— Congressman Rudy Yakym (@RepRudyYakym) February 8, 2023

Nearly an hour into his second State of the Union address and the President still hasn’t mentioned the crisis at our southern border.

Biden still hasn’t mentioned the crisis he created at our southern border. #SOTU

Joe Biden put up a wall around the Capitol for his State of the Union address but stopped all construction on President Trump's wall at our southern border.

On police reform
During Joe Biden's first year in office, 346 officers were shot in line of duty and "ambush-style attacks" against officers were up 115%.
Joe Biden and the Democrats' divisive rhetoric about law enforcement is dangerous and makes our communities less safe.— Jim Banks (@RepJimBanks) February 8, 2023

On the fentanyl crisis
I asked Biden for a meeting to discuss the Fentanyl crisis over 100 days ago and never received a response.
In fact, Joe Biden has denounced “MAGA Republicans" more than he has Mexican drug cartels or China.
He's not interested in "unity" or working together.— Jim Banks (@RepJimBanks) February 8, 2023
Secure the border.
Stop the fentanyl flow from China.— Senator Mike Braun (@SenatorBraun) February 8, 2023
If the President is serious about stopping the illicit Fentanyl Crisis, he should encourage House and Senate Democrats to pass the HALT Fentanyl Act to give law enforcement tools they need to get this dangerous drug off our streets.

Official statements from Indiana lawmakers in Congress
I’m disappointed the President used this platform before a Joint Session of Congress and the American People to offer more of the same absent leadership we have sadly grown accustomed to over the last two years.

Indiana’s families, farmers, and businesses deserve better than the hand that President Biden and House and Senate Democrats have dealt them. I look forward to continuing to fight for the issues that matter most to Hoosiers. https://t.co/bB4lQagOFL pic.twitter.com/q7ynp1wQ7F
