The first trailer for The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco's new comedy thriller Based on a True Story has been released.

The Peacock series takes aim at America's obsession with the true crime genre as a realtor called Ava Bartlett (Cuoco) and former tennis star husband Nathan (Chris Messina) team up with a plumber (Tom Bateman) to cash in on the craze.

In the trailer, we get a taste of what's to come, with Ava showing her obsession with true crime while going about her normal daily business.

"They're talking about this serial killer that's basically in our backyard – it's so exciting!" she declares at one point.

However, when the pair get into financial difficulty, a grisly murder takes place that spurs Ava on with the idea to make a podcast about the case – though before they know it, they're in too deep.

As well as Cuoco, Messina and Bateman, the series stars Good Trouble's Priscilla Quintana, Scream VI's Liana Liberato, and Stranger Things' Natalia Dyer.

Alex Alomar Akpobome (Industry), Aisha Alfa (Criminal Minds), Annabelle Dexter-Jones and Li Jun Li (Sex/Life) also feature in the cast.
