The first images for Based on a True Story, a new drama starring The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco and Air's Chris Messina, have been released.

The eight-part limited series, which is created by Craig Rosenberg (The Boys, Gen V) and executive produced by Ozark's Jason Bateman, is set to serve as a satirical look at America's dark obsession with the true-crime genre (via Collider).

The story centres on realtor Ava Bartlett (Cuoco) and her former tennis star husband Nathan (Messina), who team up with a plumber (Tom Bateman) in order to cash in on the twisted craze.

The first few photos see Ava and Nathan in full murder mystery mode, looking shocked at whatever's unfolding before them.

"Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show."

Rosenberg continued: "I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn't come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage.

"Our Los Angeles setting – the city where everybody wants to be famous – became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder. Please sit back and join Ava and Nathan as they try to navigate the dangerous proposal they make."

Based on a True Story season 1 premieres in its entirety on June 8 on Peacock.
