Big Bob Gibson's Danville Road location damaged by fire

Jan. 14—The pitmaster of Decatur's nationally known Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q said its Danville Road Southwest location could reopen Monday or Tuesday after repairs to the pit area damaged by fire Friday afternoon.

Chris Lilly said the fire occurred about 4 p.m., and Decatur Fire and Rescue "came in a flash" to extinguish the fire, limiting the damage.

"Basically it was a grease fire that was contained in the old-fashioned brick coffin pit," Lilly said. "Whenever you're cooking real barbecue with wood and hot coals, sometimes these things happen."

Damage in the pit area included the ceiling, but Lilly said there was no damage to the seating area or kitchen in the Danville Road location. The restaurant's Sixth Avenue location continues to operate on its normal schedule, he said.
