The Northwest Florida-area Arby's team recently selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida to be a recipient of a $30,000 Arby’s Foundation grant, which will be used to support the Beyond School Walls program in Escambia County.

The Beyond School Walls program is aimed at helping students improve their chances of graduating and transitioning to the workplace, post-secondary education, vocational school, or the military. This exposure and encouragement from volunteer mentors makes a world of difference.

From 1990 to 2010, Arby's was Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's longest standing corporate partner, supporting the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission for over 20 years, and giving more than 30 million dollars to Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2018, the partnership renewed, bringing together Big Brothers Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, and No Kid Hungry, giving them the ability to have a greater impact on a child's wellbeing by addressing youth leadership and career readiness in addition to childhood hunger.

Each volunteer will receive a list of names that will take approximately two minutes to read. Anyone may volunteer to read and can sign up to do so online at wsre.org/readingofnames, where the Reading of the Names will be live-streamed, as well.

The 58,318 names engraved on the granite panels of the Wall South — a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. — will be read aloud at the apex of the memorial.

The last page of names, reflecting the last casualties of the Vietnam War, will be read by three local Vietnam War veterans at the park’s Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

Painting donated to Ballet Pensacola by Frederic G. Levin family

Brenton Goodman, grandson of the late, Pensacola-born Attorney, Fredric G. Levin, recently donated a seven-foot-tall painting to Ballet Pensacola, Pensacola’s resident professional Ballet Company and Academy. The ballet-themed oil painting was a piece Levin had commissioned by former Pensacola artist Patrick Gabriel. The painting features an image of two ballet dancers and is reminiscent of the work of Edgar Degas.

Formerly, the painting was displayed in the foyer of Levin’s Pensacola home for more than 30 years. Levin loved Gabriel’s work and ultimately commissioned two works by him. Ballet Pensacola will display the painting prominently at The Center, Clark Family Cultural Center as a part of its $3 million renovation project.
