Big Country day at Cowboys' stadium: Abilene-area teams dominate schedule

ARLINGTON - If you go to AT&T Stadium on Wednesday, there's a good chance you'll run into someone you know.

Four of the five Abilene-area teams that qualified for a UIL state football championship game are playing - two against each other in the Brunch Bowl.

At 11 a.m., No. 6 Loraine gets another shot at No. 1 and unbeaten Benjamin. Loraine's only loss was to Benjamin in the final non-district game for both teams. They first met in Loraine; now, they meet at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Bulldogs were one of two teams that took Benjamin to four quarters this season. Benjamin's other 12 wins were by 45 points or more.

The teams are playing for the Class 1A Division II title.

Neither has won a football title.

At 2 pm., defending Class 1A Division I champ Westbrook takes on No. 1 and unbeaten Abbott.

Westbrook won its first title last year, surprising favorite May in the final. The Wildcats have lost just once this year, by four points to Garden City, In the playoffs, Westbrook avenged that loss with a 50-point win.

Abbott is 1-1 in title games, beating Crowell in 2015 and losing to Throckmorton in 2012.

Finally, at 7 p.m., preseason No. 1 Albany faces off against current No. 1, Mart for the Class 2A Division II title. Mart was in this game in 2019, holding off Hamlin 25-20 to deny the Pipers their first championship.

Albany was won 10 straight games after back-to-back losses with key players injured.

The final game involving area teams will be The Cat Fight at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Hawley, unbeaten and ranked No. 2 all season, faces Refugio. The Bobcats two weeks ago eliminated the team that topped Hawley last year, Shiner.

The Bearcats have won 30 of their past 31 games.

Refugio is making its 11th state championship game appearance since 1968, winning four times. The Bobcats have played Cisco twice, winning in 2011 and losing in 2013.
