Big Country Hoops: Clyde girls earn signature home win over Brady

Clyde’s girls basketball team earned a much-needed win Tuesday.

The Bulldogs sailed to a 60-30 win over Brady at home, improving to 3-5 in district play. The win kept Clyde’s playoff hopes alive.

Sophomore Avery Hafner led Clyde with 16 points, while senior Liz Underwood scored 15.

“They knew that if we wanted to make the playoffs, we had to win this one,” Clyde head coach Jamie Masonheimer said. “It wasn’t anything I did; they motivated themselves.”

Clyde will face Ballinger at home on Friday, hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive.

“We have to win again,” Masonheimer said.

Jim Ned at Ballinger (girls)

At Ballinger, the Jim Ned girls earned a 49-34 win over the Ladycats.

Ashlynn Galvin led Jim Ned with 17 points, while Lexi Wishert added 10. Senior Claire Graham did not play for the Lady Indians.

Addison Martin led Ballinger with 14 points.

Jim Ned remained undefeated in district play with the win, now 10-0. Ballinger is 1-4 in league play and 10-8 overall.

TLCA Abilene at Hermleigh (girls)

At home, the Hermleigh girls had no problem with TLCA Abilene, winning 80-13.

Six of Hermleigh’s eight players finished the game in double figures, and freshman Mia Pence led the Lady Cardinals with 14 points. Hermleigh forced 25 turnovers.

Ranked No. 7 in the TABC 1A Girls Rankings, Hermleigh is 23-7, 8-0.

Roscoe at Coleman

At Coleman, Roscoe’s girls earned a 37-30 win over the Bluecats. Kaidy Omales paced the Plowgirls’ offense, scoring 17 points.

Both teams struggled offensively, as Roscoe shot 18% from the field and Coleman shot 14%. But Roscoe’s defense, which forced 23 turnovers, was strong enough to earn the win.

The Plowgirls are 21-6, 6-0, while Coleman is 7-17, 2-4.

Coleman won the boys game between the Bluecats and Plowboys 69-36.

Junior Braxton Smith scored a team-high 15 points, while Jadin Jackson and Devinar Roberson each scored 13. The Bluecats shot exceptionally from deep, making 9 of 17 three-point attempts.

Coleman is 10-12, 1-2, while Roscoe is 2-8, 0-3.

Millsap at Early

At home, the Early boys cruised past Millsap 75-28.

Four Longhorns — Jaxyn Price, Vic Cooper, John-Stewart Gordon and Jeremy Brown — finished in double figures. Price’s 18 points were the team-high.

The Longhorns are 19-8, 6-2.

In the girls game, Early squeaked out a 40-38 win. The Longhorns played exceptionally on defense, holding Millsap to a 25% clip from the field.

Early’s girls are 6-11, 4-4.

Jayton at Motley County (girls)

At Motley County, Jayton’s girls coasted to a 35-19 win.

The Lady Jaybirds came out of the gates firing, outscoring the Matadors 18-5 in the first quarter. From there, Jayton sailed to victory and improved to 22-6, 6-0.

Daylee Chisum led Jayton with 12 points. The Lady Jaybirds are ranked No. 11 in the 1A rankings.

Gorman at Strawn (girls)

At Strawn, a strong second half propelled the Gorman girls to a 61-31 win over the Greyhounds.

The Panthers outscored the Greyhounds 40-11 in the final two quarters after 25-20 at halftime. Mariella Rodriguez led Gorman with 17 points.

The Panthers are 11-15, 4-3, while Strawn is 7-4, 1-4.

Aspermont at Knox City (boys)

At Knox City, Aspermont earned a 50-39 win over the Greyhounds. Donovan Miller led the Hornets with 23 points, while Bryson Callaway’s 11 points were a team-high for Knox City.

Aspermont is 21-8, 6-0, while Knox City is 13-9, 4-3.

Stamford at Cisco (girls)

At Cisco, Stamford’s girls team continued its winning ways, beating the Loboes 55-45.

Laylonna Applin was once again Stamford’s leading scorer, notching 21 points. Tylee Bevel also ended in double figures with 11 points.

The Lady Bulldogs are 27-2, 9-0, while Cisco is 13-6, 5-2.
