Big Country hoops: Early Longhorns sweep Dublin Lions on road

DUBLIN - Early’s boys team hit the road and got into a shootout.

The Longhorns and Lions traded basket for basket until the final minutes, when Early prevailed with a 77-74 win.

Vic Cooper was exceptional for the Longhorns, finishing with a game-high 35 points. Junior Jeremy Brown chipped in with 18.

For Dublin, Ayush Patel scored 26 points and Dalan Rasberry scored 13.

Early is 16-8 overall and 3-2 in district and will face Bangs on Tuesday. Dublin is 7-8, 1-2 and faces Brock next.

The girls game was also a good one.

Early and Dublin went back and forth before the Longhorns escaped with a 44-35 win in a game that was close for all 32 minutes.

Madison Torrez led the Longhorns with 14 points. Gabriyela Herrera was Dublin’s leading scorer, finishing with 17 points.

The Longhorns are 4-10, 2-3, while Dublin is 3-18, 1-4.

Jayton at Patton Springs (girls)

At Patton Springs, Jayton played one of its closest games Thursday but still won by nine points on the road.

The Lady Jays won 40-31, thanks to a quick start. Jayton led 33-19 heading into the fourth quarter. Sophomore Daylee Chisum led Jayton with 15 points.

The Lady Jays, ranked No. 11 in 1A, are 11-2 overall, 2-0 in district.

Coleman at Miles (boys)

At Miles, Coleman opened district play in the win column, taking down Miles 61-57.

Coleman and Miles went to halftime tied at 32, but the Bluecats outscored the Bulldogs 29-25 in the second half.

Braxton Smith was Coleman’s top contributor. The junior went 10-of-18 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, finishing with 31 points. He also had four assists and four rebounds.

The Bluecats will look to stay undefeated in league play Tuesday against Colorado City.

Lampasas at Stephenville (girls)

At Stephenville, the Stephenville girls came out firing against Lampasas after losing three of their past five games.

The Honeybees scored 26 points in the first quarter en route to a 71-41 win. Mya Wesley had a team-high 30 points, while Landri Withers also reached double figures with 12.

Stephenville is 18-9, 1-1 and will face Gatesville on the road Tuesday.
