Big Country Rewind Week 9: No. 2 China Spring stuns No. 1 Stephenville on final play

CHINA SPRING – No. 1 Stephenville finally ran out of luck.

Thomas Barr kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired to lift No. 2 China Spring over the Yellow Jackets 38-36 in a District 5-4A Division I game Friday.

It appeared Stephenville (7-1 overall, 1-1 district) had the game won when Ryder Lambert threw a 30-yard TD pass to Tytus Russell one play after an interception. Lambert then ran for the two-point conversion, giving the Yellow Jackets a 36-35 lead with 56 seconds left in the game.

Stephenville went into the fourth quarter trailing 28-14, after being down 21-7 at halftime.

However, the Cougars (8-1, 3-0) ate up 45 yards on two pass plays, including a fourth-down catch, to set up Barr’s winning kick in a game featuring both 4A state champions from last season.

Stephenville beat Austin Johnson 38-21 for the 4A DI title last year, while China Spring beat Gilmer 31-7 for the 4A DII title.

The Yellow Jackets play Alvarado (3-5, 0-2) on Friday in Stephenville.

No. 2 Hawley downs Olney

At Hawley, Rodey Hooper completed 12 of 16 passes for 222 yards and four TDs in No. 2 Hawley’s 34-7 victory over Olney in a District 4-2A DI contest.

Will Scott caught three passes for 90 yards – two for TDs. Kason O’Shields (4 catches, 84 yards) and Chandlin Myers (1-25) each had a TD catch.

Austin Cumpton ran for 67 yards and a TD on nine carries.

Hawley (8-0, 4-0) plays at Stamford next week before the big showdown with No. 8 Cisco (7-1, 4-0), which had a bye this week.

No. 8 Albany races past Plowboys

At Roscoe, Cole Chapman made a triumphant return from an injury to throw for 105 yards and three TDs to guide No. 8 Albany past Roscoe 55-0 in a District 6-2A DII game.

London Fuentes, who had filled in at quarterback while Chapman sat out four games, had two catches for 97 yards – both TDs. Adam Hill also had a 4-yard TD catch.

Coy Lefevre ran for 94 yards and two TDs on nine carries, and Hill had 27 yards and a TD on four carries.

Albany (6-2, 3-0) plays at Hamlin (5-3, 1-2) next week and can clinch at least a share of the district title with a win.

Roscoe (4-3, 2-1) is at Miles (6-2, 2-1) in a game that should settle second place.

Comanche crushes Dublin

At Comanche, Wilkerson ran for 310 yards and four touchdowns to power Comanche past Dublin 77-7 in a District 5-3A DII game.

Layden Welch completed all four of his passes for 140 yards and two TDs, and also ran for a TD.

Cayden Davis and Ezequiel Medrano each ran for TDs as part of a Comanche team that rolled up 512 yards on the ground and averaged 17.1 yards per carry.

Medrano also returned an interception for a TD.

Kyler Beaty, Miguel Martinez and J.J. Davis each had TD catches, including a 53-yarder by Davis.

Comanche (7-1, 3-0) can clinch at least a share of the district title with a win at Merkel (3-5, 2-1) on Friday.

Jacksboro beat the Badgers 50-7 on Friday in Merkel.

Dublin (2-6, 0-3) plays at Eastland (0-8, 0-3) next week.

Stamford rolls past Anson

At Anson, Christian Duran threw for 141 yards and four TDs to propel Stamford to a 44-6 victory over Anson in a District 4-2A DI game.

Quinten Pryor, Hayden Henager, Kason Vega and Cayden Moreno each had a TD catch.

Henager ran for 76 yards on 10 carries, Duran followed with 54 on seven carries, and Cai Whitfield had 52 yards and a TD on six carries. All were part of a Bulldog rushing attack that rolled up 232 yards.

Stamford (7-1, 3-1) bounced back from last week’s 47-14 loss to No. 8 Cisco. The Bulldogs play No. 2 Hawley (8-0, 4-0) on Friday in Stamford.

Anson (2-7, 2-3), which is fighting for final district playoff berth, wraps up the regular season at Cisco next week.

Cox tosses Coahoma past Stanton

At Coahoma, Boyd Cox threw for 166 yards and three TDs to lead Coahoma past Stanton 40-12 in a District 4-3A DII game.

Austin Perkins had five catches for 79 yards, including TD receptions for 29 and 35 yards.

Jaidyn Vineyard ran for 161 yards and two TDs on 21 carries, while Billy Bailey also had a 12-yard TD run to beat Stanton (2-6, 0-3).

The Bulldogs (6-2, 2-1) play at Lubbock Roosevelt (3-5, 1-2) next week. Coahoma is a game back of Idalou, which beat the Bulldogs 28-16 last week.

Bowie edges Clyde

At Clyde, Bowie nipped Clyde 21-14 in a District 3-3A DI game.

Tucker Jones completed 15 of 23 passes for 141 yards and a TD to Landrum Wells for Clyde. He threw three picks.

Fabian Gomez led the Bulldogs (4-4, 0-3) with 114 yards and a TD on 18 carries, and Josh Hutton followed with 103 yards on 19 carries.

Bowie (1-7, 1-2) is tied with Breckenridge (6-2, 1-2) for fourth in the district standings. The Bucks play the Jackrabbits on Friday in Bowie.

Clyde is home Friday against Iowa Park (3-5, 2-1), which upset Vernon.

Knox City routs Northside

At Knox City, Devin Guillory caught two TD passes and returned two interceptions for TDs as well as Knox City beat Vernon Northside 64-8 in the District 4-1A Division I opener Thursday.

Bryson Callaway threw for 128 yards and three TDs, including scores of 46 and 27 yards to Guillory. John Cross Utley also had a 26-yard TD catch for the Greyhounds (6-2, 1-0).

Tristin Baxter ran for TDs of 42 and 1 yards, while Caleb Arietta and Cameron Hernandez ran for TDs of 37 and 7 yards, respectively.

Northside (4-4, 0-1) got its lone score when Matthew Brooks returned a kickoff 46 yards for a touchdown.

The game was stopped at halftime on the 45-point rule.
