How big is FedEx's impact on the global economy? What to know from a new report

With almost 550,000 employees and more than 5,000 facilities around the world, FedEx is certainly a major player in the global economy.

To demonstrate this, the Memphis-based logistics giant recently released an analysis of its direct and indirect impact on the global economy in Fiscal Year 2022 as a whole and broken down by region, conducted by business analytics company Dun & Bradstreet.

FedEx released a similar report of its economic impact on the U.S. in 2021, but this is the first time it has generated its own study with a global perspective.

"As previewed in last year’s economic impact study, this year’s report fulfills the promise we made to look beyond the U.S. economy and provide insights into the impact FedEx has in all the regions in which we operate," CEO Raj Subramaniam said in the report's introduction.

Among the main points of the report, FedEx estimated it delivered 16 million shipments per day and, outside its actual operations, supported $22 billion of economic activity.

Here are some other key takeaways from the study.

FedEx's global impact

FedEx represented 1.2% of the overall net economic output in the Transportation, Storage, and Communications sector of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and 0.1% of net output for all industries.

FedEx also brought in $22.6 billion in indirect contributions to net economic output, which includes activity at least one step removed from direct FedEx investment, such as contributions to the greater supply chain or increased activity around FedEx locations.

Through its FedEx Cares segment, the company also contributed $86 million in charitable donations to various nonprofit organizations around the world.

FedEx's impact in the United States

FedEx represented 12% of net economic output in the transportation and logistics sectors and 0.3% of net economic output for all industries in the U.S. The company also contributed $8.5 billion in indirect net economic output to the country.

As its global base of operations, the majority of FedEx jobs are located in the U.S., employing 412,770 people. The company also supplied $17 million in tuition assistance to almost 11,000 of those employees.

FedEx also completed millions of dollars worth of capital investment projects this year, including opening the FedEx Logistics headquarters in Memphis and expanding the FedEx Express air cargo hub at Miami International Airport.

FedEx's impact in the Americas

FedEx represented nearly 7% of net economic output for the Transportation, Storage, and Communications sector (including above U.S. contributions) and contributed $12 billion in indirect net economic output to the region.

The company employed 22,930 people in Canada and 24,389 people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mexico in particular experienced massive growth in the last year with the opening of 25 new FedEx shipping stations across the country.
