‘Big ol’ fish’ had angler ‘jumping up and down’ — and broke Wyoming state record

Owen Schaad reeled in massive fish from a Wyoming reservoir and started “jumping up and down.”

He had caught a record-breaking tiger trout.

Schaad from Cheyenne was fishing with his family at the Viva Naughton Reservoir near Kemmerer, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department said in a June 26 news release.

He had spent hours at the reservoir, catching at least 20 fish, Schaad told the wildlife agency.

“Out of nowhere I hook onto this big ol’ fish and I think it’s a brown trout,” he said, per the release.

After about 20 minutes of reeling the fish to the bank, he got it into his net and saw what he had caught a tiger trout.

“I was all excited, jumping up and down,” he told the agency.

He then brought the fish with him and had it weighed on a certified scale. It weighed 11.93 pounds and was 31 inches with a girth of 16.5 inches, officials said.

This tiger trout broke the Wyoming state record, which was last set in May 2012.

“It was probably the most exciting day of my life,” Schaad said, according to the release.

“Fish need remarkable conditions to grow that big. As people catch those fish it becomes less likely another fish with those conditions will be caught again any time soon,” the wildlife agency’s assistant fisheries management coordinator Mark Smith said in the release.

Kemmerer is in southwestern Wyoming.
