This year’s programing is focused on Greek mythology. The Big Read features “Circe” by Madeline Miller, while the Little Read highlights “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Peña. For middle readers, Homer’s “The Odyssey” is the featured title.

“This year, we are using Madeline Miller's 'Circe' as a springboard to explore Greek mythology, the hero's journey, and what it means to be a hero in different times, places, and cultures,” program director Deborah Van Duinen wrote in a statement. “Our events and book discussions are designed to get at these topics and themes in a variety of ways and we're excited to learn with and from our lakeshore readers of all ages.”

A kickoff event was held Wednesday, Nov. 1, with Hope’s Stephen Maiullo giving a talk titled “Why Read Greek Mythology?”

In-person visits by featured authors will return this year after virtual visits during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

de la Peña will visit the area for a pair of events, one in Holland and one in Muskegon. Events will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Hope College’s Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts and at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Frauenthal Center in Muskegon.
