Big second quarter propels Midland Legacy to big win over Abilene High

MIDLAND - The Midland Legacy football team made sure Friday that last week’s tough loss to Amarillo Tascosa wasn’t going linger for another week.

Division I quarterback prospect Marcos Davila was deadly accurate, completing 87% of his passes by going 20 of 23 for 355 yards and five touchdown passes to lead Legacy to a 56-20 blowout victory over Abilene High on homecoming night at Astound Broadband Stadium.

Deonta Sonnier was Davila’s favorite target, as the senior hauled in nine catches for 172 yards and three touchdowns to help the Rebels score 56 unanswered points to take a 56-7 lead in the third quarter.

Legacy (2-1) bounced back from a 48-27 road loss to Tascosa.

The Eagles fell to 1-2 despite scoring more points Friday than they did in their previous two games combined (17). AHS was coming off a 14-10 win over crosstown rival Abilene Cooper.

It was Abilene High's third straight game against former longtime district opponents.

Abilene High got the ball first and seized the opportunity by marching down field on an eight-play, 85-yard scoring drive.

Antoine Rashaw ran for 38 yards on the first play from scrimmage and Tim Outlaw finished it off by scoring on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Slack on fourth-and-10.

But Legacy would answer in resounding fashion, as Davila spun a deep pass that landed right in the arms of Sonnier for a 42-yard TD, tying the contest at 7.

The Rebels then kept the ball out of the hands of the Abilene offense, as Damien Johnson recovered a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff at the Eagles 30.

Taking advantage of the short field, Davila threw a 7-yard TD pass to Sonnier on a wide receiver screen, pushing the Rebels to a 14-7 lead.

LHS followed with a squib kick, which was recovered by Esus Robledo at the Abilene 38.

On the Rebels’ offensive possession, Davila threw a 36-yard TD pass to a diving and wide-open Collin Brazzell in the back of the end zone on third-and-18. LHS led 20-7 with 1:00 in the first quarter during a three-possession stretch when the Eagles offense didn’t touch the ball.

The Rebels poured on 29 more points in the second quarter to take a 49-7 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, Nathaniel Brito scored on a 1-yard run; Davila threw an 85-yard deep TD pass to Brex Stevens on third-and-9 and Sonnier caught a long pass from Davila along the sideline that he turned into 55-yard TD reception after cutting back inside.

Brazzell scored in the third quarter in the end zone after he recovered a fumble in the end zone after Zeke Luna coughed up the football on a 10-yard run just short of the goal line.

Hartman pulled the offensive starters after Luna scored on a 7-yard TD run to open the second half and put LHS up 56-7.

That score was set up by a 55-yard pass from Davila to Sonnier.

Stevens had three catches for 100 yards and Luna rushed for 98 yards on 14 carries.

Slack accounted for all three Abilene scores by throwing two TD passes and rushing for one. Slack threw for 162 yards on 18-of-27 passing.

His second TD pass went 15 yards to Austin Wood in the third quarter.

Abilene High was tough against the run again, allowing just over 100 yards. But Legacy thrived in the pass game.
