Purdue came up short in its upset bid against No. 2 Michigan in Saturday's Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Boilermakers trailed by just one point at halftime, but too many red zone trips ended in field goals instead of touchdowns and the Wolverines eventually pulled away and into the College Football Playoff.

Here's how it happened.

It ain't over yet.

FIELD GOAL. Purdue wastes a golden opportunity. After getting 1st-and-goal at the 8-yard line, the offense stalls. Aidan O'Connell is sacked on third down and a 15-yard penalty pushes the field goal attempt to 43 yards. But Mitchell Fineran nails it.

9:29 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 13

INTERCEPTION at the 1-yard line. The Boilermakers were driving deep into Michigan territory, but Aidan O'Connell makes his first mistake of the game. Of note, on the drive Charlie Jones set Purdue's single-season receiving record.

HALFTIME: Michigan 14, Purdue 13

Aidan O'Connell is having himself a night. The Purdue QB is 19-of-22 passing for 183 yards and the Boilermakers are outgaining the Wolverines 215-135. Purdue certainly doesn't look overmatched or out of place in the Big Ten Championship game so far.

1:23 2Q: Michigan 14, Purdue 13

FIELD GOAL. Mitchell Fineran hits from 45 yards away, sneaking it just inside the upright. Boilers not going away.

Devin Mockobee gets the ball over the goal-line on the next play (Yes, after yet another review). A really good answer from the Boilermakers.

9:11 1Q: Michigan 7, Purdue 0

TOUCHDOWN: After two third-down conversions and one reaaaaaaaaally long officials review, the Wolverines strike first with a 25-yard strike from J.J. McCarthy to Colston Loveland. Was a nice grab between two Purdue defenders.

>> Purdue defensive lineman Branson Deen was going through warmups despite some pessimism earlier in the week when Jeff Brohm said this about the Lawrence Central grad's availability: "Probably not, but I don't want to rule it out. But I'm not optimistic on that one"
