Purdue came up short in its upset bid against No. 2 Michigan in Saturday's Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Boilermakers trailed by just one point at halftime, but too many red zone trips ended in field goals instead of touchdowns and the Wolverines eventually pulled away and into the College Football Playoff.
Here's how it happened.
Doyel:Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell is a hero. If there's a better word, let’s hear it.
More:Charlie Jones came to Purdue with a point to prove. He put together a season for the ages.
More:Second-half blitz carries No. 2 Michigan past Purdue football to claim Big Ten title
FINAL: Michigan 43, Purdue 22
1:22 4Q: Michigan 43, Purdue 22
Kalel Mullings adds a short rushing score to cover the spread. Some folks care about that sort of thing.
5:07 4Q: Michigan 36, Purdue 22
FIELD GOAL. Mitchell Fineran hits his career-high fifth field goal of the game, this time from 32 yards out to bring the Boilers to within two touchdowns.
Purdue’s commitment to field goals is almost admirable at this point.

9:06 4Q: Michigan 36, Purdue 19
On 3rd-and-11, J.J. McCarthy hits Ronnie Bell for a 17-yard touchdown, and that might do it.
9:57 4Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 19
INTERCEPTION. Michigan's Will Johnson steps in front of slant pass from Aidan O'Connell deep in Boilers territory. A back-breaker.
10:07 4Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 19
Purdue defense forces a punt after the refs pick up a would-be facemask flag on third down. Could have gone either way. Boilers catch a break.
12:37 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 19
FIELD GOAL. Instead of going for it on 4th-and-6 at the 10-yard line, Jeff Brohm elects to kick the 27-yard field goal by Mitchell Fineran.
Purdue needs touchdowns, not FGs.

END 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 16
It ain't over yet.
1:35 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 16
INTERCEPTION. Jamari Brown picks off J.J. McCarthy and the Boilermakers have some momentum. Big drive coming up for Purdue offense.
3:37 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 16
FIELD GOAL. Purdue wastes a golden opportunity. After getting 1st-and-goal at the 8-yard line, the offense stalls. Aidan O'Connell is sacked on third down and a 15-yard penalty pushes the field goal attempt to 43 yards. But Mitchell Fineran nails it.
That Purdue field goal is the first time a B1G West team has scored in the 2nd half of the B1G title game since Northwestern against Ohio State in 2018.

9:29 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 13
INTERCEPTION at the 1-yard line. The Boilermakers were driving deep into Michigan territory, but Aidan O'Connell makes his first mistake of the game. Of note, on the drive Charlie Jones set Purdue's single-season receiving record.
10:32 3Q: Michigan 28, Purdue 13
TOUCHDOWN. Two big plays and the Wolverines are back in the end zone. First a 40-yard pass from J.J. McCarthy to Luke Schoonmaker and then a 27-yard touchdown run from Donovan Edwards. Michigan is starting to cook.
Whatever Jim Harbaugh said at halftime, it worked.
Michigan needs just 2 plays to go 67 yards and find the end zone again, and Purdue trails by 15 with 10:32 to go in 3Q.— Matthew VanTryon (@MVanTryon) December 4, 2022
12:25 3Q: Michigan 21, Purdue 13
TOUCHDOWN. On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, Donovan Edwards gets loose for a 60-yard run, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run to Kalel Mullings. Quick strike by the Wolverines out of the half.

HALFTIME: Michigan 14, Purdue 13
Aidan O'Connell is having himself a night. The Purdue QB is 19-of-22 passing for 183 yards and the Boilermakers are outgaining the Wolverines 215-135. Purdue certainly doesn't look overmatched or out of place in the Big Ten Championship game so far.
The two things you'd obviously take back are the fumbled exchange on the first play of the second quarter and the offsides on the Michigan field goal attempt.
Outside of that? Have to be happy with that first half performance.— Derek Schultz (@Schultz975) December 4, 2022
1:23 2Q: Michigan 14, Purdue 13
FIELD GOAL. Mitchell Fineran hits from 45 yards away, sneaking it just inside the upright. Boilers not going away.
Took a lap around the concourse. Most fans are in their seats. Wolverines certainly have more fans here, but Purdue supporters are vocal.
Michigan up 14-13 with 1:23 to go in the first half. Purdue just hit a FG. Big drive coming up here, since Michigan starts 2H w/ the ball.— Matthew VanTryon (@MVanTryon) December 4, 2022
7:05 2Q: Michigan 14, Purdue 10
TOUCHDOWN. Purdue jumps offsides on a 48-yard field goal attempt and the Wolverines decide to go for the first down on 4th-and-1 and get it. A few plays later, Michigan scores on a 6-yard pass from J.J. McCarthy to Luke Schoonmaker. Brutal.

Undisciplined football gets you beat! Moody missed the FG now they have a 1st down.

13:39 2Q: Purdue 10, Michigan 7
FIELD GOAL. Mitchell Fineran hits the 33-yard field goal, and the Boilermakers lead.
Purdue looking like they might want it more then michigan fr

END 1Q: Purdue 7, Michigan 7
Boilermakers convert a fake punt on 4th-and-4 at midfield into a first down to Payne Durham and are driving in Wolverines' territory. Purdue playing loose and making plays.
4:54 1Q: Michigan 7, Purdue 7
TOUCHDOWN: A nice mix of passes to the running backs and Charlie Jones helps Purdue march 92 yards down the field and Tyrone Tracy seemingly capped off the impressive drive with a 21-yard touchdown run before a review ruled him down at the half-yard line. Devin Mockobee gets the ball over the goal-line on the next play (Yes, after yet another review). A really good answer from the Boilermakers.
After review, it's a BOILERMAKER TOUCHDOWN! 🚂 @BoilerFootball pic.twitter.com/g6oSBOTgwY

9:11 1Q: Michigan 7, Purdue 0
TOUCHDOWN: After two third-down conversions and one reaaaaaaaaally long officials review, the Wolverines strike first with a 25-yard strike from J.J. McCarthy to Colston Loveland. Was a nice grab between two Purdue defenders.
Colston Loveland's first two career TDs:

A rough first drive for the Boilermakers. Purdue loses 10 yards on its first three plays, including a third-down sack of Aidan O'Connell.
>> As expected, Aidan O'Connell will start at quarterback for the Boilermakers.

>> Purdue defensive lineman Branson Deen was going through warmups despite some pessimism earlier in the week when Jeff Brohm said this about the Lawrence Central grad's availability: "Probably not, but I don't want to rule it out. But I'm not optimistic on that one"
