Big-ticket items: GAR Foundation approves $880,000 in capital funds

The GAR Foundation has approved $880,000 in capital funding to 28 community organizations in Greater Akron.
The foundation offers funding for “mission-critical capital projects” on a periodic basis, typically every other year.
This year, the foundation made several larger awards for special one-time cultural projects, including Sojourner Truth Plaza, the new Akron History Center, The Nightlight cinema and the Akron Art Museum.
“We continue to be impressed with the innovative work coming from our local nonprofits and these grants will help them achieve mission-critical objectives,” GAR Foundation President Christine Amer Mayer said in a prepared statement. “We saw a lot of important community-building and expansion projects that will strengthen public spaces and increase services to the community.”
The organizations receiving capital support:
Akron Art Museum: $125,000 for the Centennial Campaign.
Akron Children’s Museum: $21,000 for expansion of new exhibits.
Akron History Center: $65,000 for the Akron History Center in The Bowery.
Akron Parks Collaborative: $25,000 to revitalize Morgan Park.
Akron AxessPointe Community Health Centers: $20,000 for a new Federally Qualified Health Center.
Broken Chains Jail & Prison Ministry: $10,000 for capital upgrades to its women’s residence.
Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture: $7,500 for new signage and safety upgrades.
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad: $20,000 for new locomotives and maintenance of existing locomotives.
Family & Community Services Inc.: $20,000 for improvements to Valor Home, their Summit County facility for homeless veterans.
Family Promise of Summit County: $24,000 for renovations to a second house in the Survive to Thrive Program.
Friends of 91.3: $15,000 for upgrades to equipment for in-house production.
Friends of Glendale Cemetery: $20,000 for road paving and repair.
Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio: $30,000 for a state-of-the-art STEM facility.
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: $20,000 for a new storage facility and safety upgrades.
Harmony House: $25,000 for creation of an emergency shelter space.
The Nightlight Cinema: $50,000 for the Second Screen Capital Campaign.
North Hill Community Development Corp.: $30,000 for enhancement of the Howard Street Heritage Courtyard.
Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition: $100,000 for long-term maintenance of the improved Lock 3 Park.
OPEN M: $14,000 for signage and security upgrades
Red Oak Behavioral Health: $20,000 for the Connect-GROW-Thrive Capital Facility Improvement Project
South Street Ministries: $20,000 for outside safety and beautification elements
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens: $20,000 for renovation of its concession stands
Stewart’s Caring Place: $15,000 for capital improvements at the Wellness Center
Summit ArtSpace: $20,000, for signage and space renovation
The Well Community Development Corp.: $12,500 for facility upgrades related to the Akron Food Works kitchen
United Way of Summit & Medina: $95,000 for the Sojourner Truth Plaza
Urban Vision: $11,000 for signage and security upgrades
Wesley Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church: $25,000 for kitchen renovations that support community outreach and engagement.
