New York and New Jersey are studying how to connect the new pedestrian and cyclist paths at the Governor Mario Cuomo and George Washington bridges by developing a path along the Palisades in North Jersey.

The corridor between the two bridges is already a busy area for cyclists traveling off the George Washington Bridge and going north, because they can connect to New York state Bicycle Route 9, which links New York City to Rouses Point on the Canadian border.

Bicycle traffic on the corridor between the two bridges is expected to increase now that a new bike path on the north side of the George Washington Bridge is completed and as construction begins on a path along the southern side of the bridge.

The study will examine how to build a "separated shared use path between the two bridges" along a roughly 20-mile route made up of the Palisades Interstate Parkway and U.S. 9W that connects Bergen and Rockland counties.

The $356,206 contract for the study, which is being paid for with a Federal Highway Administration planning grant, is being overseen by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, in consultation with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.
