Biker dies in Route 50 crash in Worcester County; second motorcycle fatality in two days

Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Thursday in Worcester County, the second one this week as OC BikeFest and Delmarva Bike Week continue.

At about 4:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, troopers from the Maryland State Police Berlin Barrack responded to Route 50 at Route 610 in Worcester County for a report of a motor vehicle crash. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on Route 610 and tried to cross Route 50 when it was struck by a 2017 Nissan Rogue traveling west on Route 50.

The driver of the motorcycle, Richard Banning, 61, of Virginia, was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment of his injuries. He was declared dead Friday morning at the hospital. The passenger on the motorcycle, a 59-year-old female, was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury for treatment of her injuries. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.

In a separate incident also in Worcester County, Ocean City Police Department is investigating a motorcycle death.

The crash occurred Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022.

Ocean City officers responded to a motor vehicle collision near 100th Street and Coastal Highway north at about 5:15 p.m. The victim, Nicholas Ramirez, 32, of Deltona, Fla., was flown by Trooper 4 to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, where he died to his injuries, the Thursday news release states.

Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a motorcycle in the area of 67th Street, police said. The motorcycle fled from officers, at which time the officer did not pursue the motorcycle, the Ocean City police release states. The officer provided a detailed description of the motorcyclist and motorcycle to other officers.

A short time later, Ocean City Communications dispatched officers to the motor vehicle collision at 100th Street. Ramirez was identified as the motorcyclist who had fled from officers, the release states.

In 2021, there were 74 motorcycle-involved fatalities in Maryland, an increase from 2020 when 68 fatalities occurred in the state, according to a press release from the state's Motor Vehicle Administration.

“Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable roadway users, and it’s up to each and every Marylander to take a second look for motorcyclists while traveling,” Chrissy Nizer, MDOT MVA Administrator and Governor Larry Hogan’s Highway Safety Representative, said in the May release.
