Bikers, pedestrians in Allisonville-146th Street work zone alarms county officials

Hamilton County highway officials are reminding bicyclists and pedestrians to stay away from the 146th Street and Allisonville Road intersection, where a large road construction project is underway.

Despite construction warning signs and the removal of sidewalks, the occasional biker and walker continues to rumble through on torn-up sidewalks, said Highway Director Brad Davis.

“I saw someone the other night riding a bike on the side of the road, which is just dirt,” Davis said.

The problem was first flagged by construction workers at the site who are worried a resident will get injured.

The county issued a public advisory stating the workers have seen “a large number of bicycle and pedestrian traffic within closed construction limits.” People who pass through the zone could be ticketed, Davis said. So far, no injuries have been reported.

The county is building a roundabout and overpass intersection and widening the White River bridge. The $44 million project is expected to be finished in the summer of 2025.

The only closure now is the left turn lanes on 146th Street.
