New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton and other faith leaders on May 25 in kneeling to mark the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death.

At the event hosted by the National Action Network in Upper Manhattan, de Blasio said he understood “anyone who felt betrayed” by Floyd’s killing.

“We saw a murder before our eyes committed by someone who was supposed to exemplify law,” he said.

De Blasio and Sharpton knelt for nine minutes and 29 seconds, the length of time that former police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.
