Former President Bill Clinton was admitted to the University of California Irvine's medical center earlier this week due to a urinary tract infection that led to sepsis, aides said Thursday.

Clinton's spokesman, Angel Urena, said the 75-year-old former president is being treated for a non-COVID-related infection and is "on the mend and in good spirits."

An aide to Clinton cited by the New York Times said the former president had a urological infection that developed into sepsis, which can be a life-threatening response to infection, though this case is not believed to be acute.

Clinton’s physicians released a joint statement saying he has been in the hospital since Tuesday and that his health is improving.

"He remains at the hospital for continuous monitoring. After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well. The California-based medical team has been in constant communication with the President's New York-based medical team, including his cardiologist. We hope to have him go home soon," the statement said.

Clinton felt fatigued during an event for his foundation in California and went to the medical center for testing, according to CNN's Sanjay Gupta after consulting staff and doctors.

The medical center placed Clinton in the intensive care unit, with staff saying it was "primarily" to give him privacy, said Gupta, who added that the former president could be out of this hospital as soon as Friday.

Clinton has a history of problems with his heart.

Clinton underwent a quadruple bypass for his heart in 2004 and had two stents place in an artery in 2010. The cause of this infection has not been revealed. However, Clinton's doctors made it clear his heart was not the problem.

Clinton's wife Hillary and their daughter Chelsea have not made any statements so far regarding his health.
