U.S. Rep. Bill Foster launched his reelection campaign Wednesday for another term in Illinois’ 11th Congressional District.

The Democrat from Naperville has represented the 11th District since 2013. He previously served the 14th Congressional District from 2008-11.

Foster is being challenged in the 2024 Democratic primary by Qasim Rashid, who also lives in Naperville.

Foster in a news release said as a scientist and business owner who ran for Congress to solve problems, he’s proud of what he’s been able to accomplish.

“Yet I know we have more work to do,” Foster said. “Together we can tackle rising costs, protect everyone’s rights and transform the American economy to address the 21st-century challenge of climate change by developing the sustainable and advanced manufacturing techniques to combat it.”

Foster said he’s serious about tackling issues like gun violence, climate change, voting rights protection, immigration reform and reproductive rights.

More than 30 elected federal and state officials have endorsed his candidacy as of the day of his announcement.

Foster lives in Naperville with his wife, Aesook, who is also a physicist, and he has two grown children.

He continues to be the only physicist with a doctorate in Congress.

His business career began at age 19 when he and his younger brother cofounded Electronic Theatre Controls, a company that now manufactures more than half the theater lighting equipment in the United States.

Before he became a congressman, Foster worked as a high-energy physicist and particle accelerator designer at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.
