Bill Gates, the co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, was instructed by two of the company's top officials over a decade ago to cease sending flirty emails to an employee he had previously propositioned while married to his ex-wife Melinda Gates, according to a report.

The business magnate sent the emails to a female midlevel employee at Microsoft, the report said.

He was reportedly summoned to a meeting with the company officials after they were uncovered.

In that meeting, Brad Smith, Microsoft's then-top lawyer, and Lisa Brummel, its most senior human resources executive, informed Gates the messages were inappropriate and had to stop, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Gates allegedly agreed to end his contact with the woman, according to the report.

Microsoft first became aware of the messages in 2007, a few months before Gates was to retire from full-time services, company spokesman Frank Shaw said.

The messages, "while flirtatious, they were not overtly sexual, but were deemed to be inappropriate," Shaw said.

Bridgitt Arnold, a spokeswoman for Gates, categorically denied the accusations against him.

"These claims are false, recycled rumors from sources who have no direct knowledge, and in some cases have significant conflicts of interest," Arnold said.
