"If God had intended us to fly, he would have made it easier to get to the airport."

It looks like many readers are completing their vacations before gasoline costs become prohibitive.

Martha Craig Robertson shared photos of a trip to Lake Tahoe, Calif., which offered "breathtaking sights, and very little in the way of commercial visual obstruction, leaving the natural landscape unspoiled. We loved seeing the snow-capped mountains in the west."

She says they even drove into nearby Nevada to make sure we could add that state to our summer list.

The truck (a Dodge Ram 1500) has ripped through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. And they keep sending pictures.

They even chartered a helicopter to fly over the Grand Canyon.

TODAY'S JOKE: It was a small Southern town in which the county's sheriff was also the local veterinarian. It was different, but everybody seemed to get used to it.

Late one afternoon, the phone rang at his house.

"We need Bob," the voice on the other end told the sheriff's wife.

"Well," she asked, "do you need him as the sheriff or as a veterinarian?"

There was a pause, then the voice answered, "Both. Our dog won't open his mouth and there's a burglar in it."

Bill Kirby has reported, photographed and commented on life in Augusta and Georgia for 45 years.
