The back-and-forth between Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and Mother Jones bureau chief David Corn continued on Friday night, with O’Reilly slamming Corn as “a liar,” an “irresponsible guttersnipe” and “a far left zealot” on his program “The O’Reilly Factor.”
O’Reilly devoted the Talking Points Memo of his show to Corn, who has called O’Reilly’s accounts about covering the Falklands War between Argentina and England into question.
“Mother Jones … is low-circulation, considered by many the bottom rung of journalism in America,” O’Reilly said during the beginning of the segment. However, in this internet age, the defamation they put forth gets exposure. And so I have to deal with this garbage tonight. I’m sorry.”
In a report earlier this week, Corn questioned O’Reilly’s accounts of his coverage, accusing O’Reilly of claiming that he had covered the Falklands War up-close, when few reporters were able to gain proximity to the war zone due to its remote location.
During Friday’s segment, O’Reilly asserted, “I never said I was on the Falkland Islands, as Corn purports. I said I covered the Falklands War, which I did.”
O’Reilly noted that he had covered the Falklands War from Argentina and Uruguay for CBS News, and was on hand in the streets in Buenos Aires amid “horrific” violence between Argentine soldiers and an angry crowd after Argentina surrendered to Great Britain and a mob attempted to overthrow the government of General Leopoldo Galtieri.
O’Reilly went on to quote from an internal memo from CBS News “praising my coverage that day,” as well as a letter O’Reilly wrote to CBS News’ Ed Joyce praising the bravery of his crews.
“We have rock-solid proof that David Corn smeared me,” O’Reilly said.
“Mother Jones and the far-left websites couldn’t care less about the truth,” O’Reilly said, characterizing Corn’s report as “a political hit-job.”
