(DENVER) — On Tuesday, Feb. 6, the Colorado House of Representatives passed a bill that will regulate the sale of sodium nitrate products.

Sodium nitrate is used in the production of “suicide kits,” which have been accessible online in recent years, along with instructions for use. According to a press release from the Colorado General Assembly, Colorado residents, especially youth, have used these easy-to-access kits.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Judy Amabile and Rep. Marc Catlin, regulates the sale or transfer of products that contain sodium nitrate in quantities greater than 10 percent.

Illegal sale or transfer of the product could result in $10,000 in penalties for first-time violators, and up to $1 million for a second violation.

The bill passed by a vote of 60-4.
