Billie Eilish and Lizzo Just Made Grammys History After Dominating Nominations and Getting a “Grand Slam”

From Cosmopolitan

  • The 2020 Grammy nominations were released this morning!

  • Artists like and Ariana Grande racked up Grammy nods, but Billie Eilish and Lizzo took it a step further and made Grammys history.

If the Grammy Awards were a living, breathing person, they'd be a baby boomer turning 61 next year. Which is to say, they've been around for a bit! But two new artists, Billie Eilish and Lizzo, managed to do the next-to-impossible this year by giving the Grammys a first.

Leading the pack in Grammy nominations this year is none other than Lizzo, so insert your "100 percent that artist" jokes right here because she's got eight nominations including every major award. That is a BFD, and it's called a "Grand Slam."

You don't need to know a thing about baseball to get it: Basically, the Grammys have a lot of awards but there are four REALLY BIG ones: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. And for the first time ever, two artists scored a "Grand Slam" by being nominated for all four at the same time: Lizzo (of course), and Billie Eilish.

They join only 10 other artists ever who have scored a "Grand Slam" of Grammy nominations before. (The most recent was Sam Smith in 2015.)

Lizzo celebrated by crying on her Instagram Stories and spreading joy in all caps on Twitter, as you do:

Billie, on the other hand, seems to be processing more privately because her camp has been quiet in the hours since show host Alicia Keys and Bebe Rexha announced the chosen artists.

Looks like 2020 is already shaping up to be their year.
