Billionaire IKEA Founder Says He Buys All His Clothes Second Hand

The founder of IKEA - worth an estimated £51 billion - says that he buys all his clothes second hand, in flea markets.

Ingvar Kamprad, 89, says that he hopes to set a ‘good example’ to other people by his frugal shopping habits.

He told a Swedish magazine, ‘I don’t think I’m wearing anything that wasn’t bought at a flea market.

'It means that I want to set a good example. It’s in the nature of Smaland to be thrifty.’

Kamprad is proud of his frugal habits - living in an unassuming bungalow, and often eating his own stores’ meatballs, despite having been listed as the fourth richest person in the world.

He also flies economy class, and shops for food in local markets towards the end of the day, so that he can scoop up bargains.

In 2008, he complained to a newspaper about having been charged 22 euros for a hair cut in Holland.

He said, 'Normally, I try to get my haircut when I’m in a developing country. Last time it was in Vietnam.’
