Summer is well underway, which means lush landscapes across the country are in full bloom—including an expansive sunflower patch at Biltmore Estate, the largest privately-owned home in the United States.

The nearly mile-long patch spans from Biltmore House to Antler Hill Village and the estate’s winery, with flowers standing as tall as eight feet!

“Our sunflower crop is an amazing way to showcase the beautiful agriculture legacy of Biltmore to our guests,” Kyle Mayberry, the Director of Agriculture at Biltmore, tells House Beautiful. “As striking and photogenic as they are, they also provide nourishment to the wildlife that lives on the estate grounds. We look forward to planting the seeds each year.”

Mayberry’s team plants seeds in two waves, in order to guarantee blooms for a longer amount of time, so that as many guests as possible can enjoy these striking sunflowers throughout the summer.

According to Mayberry’s calculations, it’s expected that 144,000 sunflower plants will bloom here by the end of the season.
