Biotech company Amgen expands into New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) — A biotechnology company has arrived in Licking County with a $474 million facility.

Amgen, a biotech company established in California, is the latest tech company to come to New Albany. The plant is located at 4150 Ganton Parkway, southwest of State Route 161’s interchange with Beech Road. It will employ the equivalent of 400 full-time staff members.

Since 1980, Amgen has been an innovator in biotech, reaching millions of patients worldwide. Amgen uses “the potential of biology for patients suffering from serious illness”, according to its website. Through four core therapeutic areas — oncology, inflammation, general medicine and rare disease — the company produces medicines that address diseases with limited treatment options or provide a viable option to what is otherwise available.

An Amgen representative explained how the company chose New Albany.

“We conducted a thorough search starting with 10-15 U.S. markets across a rigorous six-month evaluation,” Elissa Snook said. “Central Ohio — and, specifically, New Albany — met a lot of our needs. We were attracted to the growing and diverse talent pool and the positive business climate in the region.”

The New Albany plant is Amgen’s most digitally and technologically advanced facility. At 300,000 square feet, the facility is expected to achieve carbon neutrality by 2027, Snook said.

Amgen is partnering with Columbus State Community College for an 18-month manufacturing apprenticeship at the site. The program will be aimed at those who are new to the field or changing careers, Snook said. Ohio State University will also see benefits, with Amgen offering internships and co-op programs, supporting students in the College of Arts and Science through grant funding, and more to the college.

“Amgen is a strong supporter of the communities in which its staff work and live, and we have developed strong relationships with many leading community, industry and academic organizations in central Ohio,” Snook said.
