BEVERLY SHORES — The exhibit “For the Birds” opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. CDT July 8 and continues through Aug. 7 at The Depot Art Museum and Art Gallery, 525 S. Broadway.

A solo exhibit by Michigan City resident Laurel Izard, “For the Birds” includes quilts and oils on clay board that depict endangered birds.

Izard uses vintage quilt tops because she finds the old fabrics and patterns in them endlessly varied and beautiful. On an emotional level, she appreciates the abandoned nature of these quilts, and symbolically, quilts make her think of mothers, grandmothers, home, safety and protection.

Another aspect of these old quilts that she reflects on is that when these women were stitching them, 50 or 60 years ago, the animals were not yet endangered.

She and her husband, Edwin Shelton, owned their own ceramics business that sold whimsical tabletop wares to galleries, boutiques and department stores throughout the country. She also has taught art at the high school level.

Currently, she works part time as the education coordinator at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City and creates art full time.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.

Admission is free.
