From Birkin to 'baguette': V&A exhibits famous bags

Sex and the City's iconic Fendi “Baguette”

and Winston Churchill’s dispatch box

are featured in a new museum exhibition

"The exhibition explores the function, symbolic meaning, design and making of bags throughout centuries. We, the earliest object in the exhibition is a 16th-century piece and we come right across the contemporary, latest it bags of today."

The exhibition features over 300 pieces

including some from Kate Moss and Alexa Chung’s private collections

"I really hope that people take away when they come and see this exhibition is that when they think about the word bags, they don't anymore just immediately connect it only with women. And they do actually see the variety and the use that men as well as women have done of bags throughout history and across the world. And the similarity that there are and the way in which we use this very functional object, but also how it became and throughout history a very symbolic expansion of ourselves."
