BIRTHDAY OF THE DAY: Shannon Bream, anchor of ‘Fox News @ Night’ and chief legal correspondent

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “My husband and I do a joint birthday celebration each year, and we’d planned a trip with several couples since we’re both hitting the big 5-0 this year. The pandemic had other plans! Every year, I love jamming all my favorite things into one day. We’ll start with a challenging workout with our trainer, followed by Chick-fil-A for lunch and an afternoon tackling that pile of magazines that’s built up the last six months [and] -- depending on the weather -- maybe a hike with our dog, Miss Biscuit Bream. And while that trip’s on hold, we’ll have dinner with just a couple of our closest friends at a favorite D.C. spot (provided that it’s open).”

How did you get your start in journalism? “I’ve always been a voracious reader and news junkie, though I went to law school and spent a few years practicing in Florida. Not long before my 30th birthday, I finally decided to take the plunge and interned at a local station overnights and weekends while I was still with my firm. I couldn’t resist the pull, and eventually transitioned from law to news. That first job was answering phones, running the prompter and eventually writing some scripts. I learned as much as I could from the reporters and photographers who would let me join them in the field, and learned on the fly. I got my first on-camera gig at that station in Tampa. The new boss who came in promptly fired me, telling me, ‘You’re the worst person I’ve ever seen on television -- you’ll never make it.’ It was just the kick in the pants I needed to commit to actually making the career change!”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading during coronavirus social distancing? And why? “There are two books I’m very grateful I got to read this year. Before the pandemic was full blown, I’d already ordered a book by Rebekah Lyons called ‘Rhythms of Renewal: Trading Stress and Anxiety for a Life of Peace and Purpose.’ It was incredibly timely! I also pulled out a book I’ve had on the shelf for a while and hadn’t gotten to finish, ‘Under Our Skin: Getting Real about Race.’ It’s by my friend Benjamin Watson. It’s a powerful read, with incredibly personal stories. I know Benjamin wrote it to launch uncomfortable, honest conversations -- and I’m so thankful he did.”

What’s a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “There’s actually good news in the world right now. Hear me out! The worst of times really can bring out the best in some people. Every night our show tries to end with ‘Good News and Good Night,’ highlighting people who are stepping up to serve others in ways big and small.”

What are you watching for in the Biden presidency? “Because I focus on the Supreme Court and the judiciary, I’ll be watching his judicial appointments. Will he get to nominate a justice or two? How will the Senate handle his nominations to the federal bench? It’s just one area that highlights how critical the two Senate seats in Georgia are for the parties.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “I’m an aspiring barista. Working from home all these months has led me to purchase a few gadgets and all kinds of syrups. It’s gotten a little out of hand. If you show up at our house, I’m probably going to force a blackberry mocha latte on you. Just ask our FedEx guy …”
