Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's visit to Erie this weekend has been canceled.

The Episcopal bishop, who delivered a sermon at the royal wedding of Megan Markle and Prince Harry, had been scheduled to visit the Erie-based Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania on Dec. 9. He was to preach at a service of Eucharist that day at 1:30 p.m. at Erie's Luther Memorial Church, 225 W. 10th St., which has a larger capacity than the nearby Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul, officials said in a Nov. 1 article on the diocese's website. The service was to be open to the public.

In a letter dated Dec. 4, the Right Rev. Sean Rowe, bishop of the Episcopal Dioceses of Western New York & Northwestern Pennsylvania, announced that local officials learned Monday that Curry had been hospitalized and undergone surgery for a subdural hematoma.

"The Presiding Bishop will need to rest and recover, and will not be able to join us in Erie this weekend as he had hoped," Rowe wrote.

He also offered a prayer for Curry.

In his earlier announcement about Curry's trip to Erie, Rowe had said, “I give thanks that Presiding Bishop Curry will be able to visit us this year, and I look forward to welcoming him to our partnership.”

Rowe leads the collaboration between the two dioceses that include churches in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.

“As a son of Buffalo, the presiding bishop holds a special place in our hearts, and I hope that friends from both of our dioceses will join us in Erie to give thanks for his ministry and be inspired by his time among us,” Rowe wrote in November.

The Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church charge the presiding bishop with visiting every diocese, according to the article. Curry has made official visits to the western New York diocese, which includes Buffalo, but this would have been his first trip to the northwestern Pennsylvania diocese.

Rowe's letter didn't say if or when Curry's visit to Erie would be rescheduled.

The presiding bishop had been hospitalized earlier this year for internal bleeding and underwent surgery in September to have his right adrenal gland and an attached mass removed, according to the Episcopal Church's Office of Public Affairs. The Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania said Curry learned in late October that he would be able to travel to Erie in December.

Curry received international attention after preaching at the 2018 royal wedding. The Most Rev. Michael Curry was installed as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church on Nov. 1, 2015, after being elected to a nine-year term.
