Bishop Moore’s varsity and junior varsity football teams have been quarantined “due to a positive COVID-19 test,” according to a message sent to parents from school administrators late Wednesday afternoon.

That means Friday’s scheduled College Park rivalry game between the Hornets, ranked No. 12 in the Sentinel Super 16, and No. 4 Edgewater has been canceled. It is uncertain when Bishop Moore will return to the field this season.

“All games and practices will be canceled until further notice," the message stated. “This decision was made in consultation with the Florida Department of Health.”

Bishop Moore athletics director Mike Malatesta and head coach Matt Hedrick did not respond to calls and text messages from the Orlando Sentinel.

Edgewater immediately began searching for a new opponent for Friday.

“Please keep affected kids and families in your thoughts and prayers. It’s bigger than football,” said Edgewater principal Mark Shanoff in a Facebook post on the official school page. “We are actively seeking another opponent for this week. Stay tuned.”

Bishop Moore is the fourth Orange County school to have a COVID-19 positive case within its football program. Evans, Freedom and Edgewater all had cases confirmed through the Orange County Public Schools rapid-testing program that was launched for football as the season opened in September.

Other area programs, including DeLand and Deltona Pine Ridge in Volusia County, Celebration High in Osceola County and Orange County’s Olympia High and Foundation Academy have had pauses in their seasons due to COVID-related issues.

Bishop Moore is scheduled to play another Super 16 team, Dr. Phillips (4-1), on the road next week. The Hornets are then scheduled to open the Class 5A playoffs with a Nov. 13 home game against Brooksville Nature Coast (5-0).
